Principal Forces Two Kids To Hold Hands In Front Of School

An Arizona high school principal forces two kids to hold hands in front of school after they are caught fighting on campus. Instead of giving the kids the usual punishment, the principal thought it would be a good idea to do something out of the ordinary and make an example of the two boys.

The two teenage boys were forced to sit in chairs and hold hands with each other. Meanwhile the rest of the school’s students paraded around them and made fun of them. This is a type of public shaming that has become a popular form of punishment. Perhaps due to the embarrassment, the two boys will remember this punishment for the rest of their lives. In addition, hopefully the example set forth by these two boys will deter other students from wanting to fight each other on campus.

In addition to just the shame suffered by being seen holding hands with each other, the students also faced verbal abuse and ridicule from other students at the school. Some students harrassed the two young kids by asking them if they were both gay, and others took video of it with their cell phones and posted it to the web. The entire time, these two boys knew that their faces were going to make it to the web, so they tried their best to cover their faces in shame.

The principal was investigated for his unusual choice of punishment, but was later found to have done nothing wrong. He was able to keep his job as the principal of the school.

Do you feel that the principal was out of line for making the two kids hold hands like this? Would he have been better off just suspending the two boys, or perhaps giving them after-school detention instead?

@Ruff, I think they need to follow in China's footsteps. On the blog about the 14yr old with the teacher, you asked what can be done to curb these kid's behavior & it got me thinking how drastic times calls for drastic measures. What this principal did was smart. Thinking outside the box. Suspension wouldn't been as bad as this public humiliation was & perhaps maybe a handful of people may know the boys were suspended. Much more witness them hold hands not to mention them being on the internet. A much stronger deterent if you don't want to be embarrassed like these 2 were.

That leads me back to the 1000 lashes. Since Americas most wanted isn't on anymore, they should make a show called "Crime & Punishment". Televise public cainings & use the death penalty nationwide in clear cut cases of those that deserve it & televise it so these criminals can see what the consequences of their actions are. Any TV that carried this show, their ratings would be through the roof.

Picnics came about when whites would gather to watch blacks get lynched back in the day. It would be a family outing. Men, women & children

The principal didn't do this with the purpose of public humiliation, the children it this such, the principal choose this form of action rather than discipline to show, "watch we were just fighting and show the other students we are now holding hands, as an example to why must we be enemies when we can be friends. And to have them think about whats the difference between peace and war.But this can backfire against any of the participants or spectators of this event who through immaturity haven't learned this lesson or this even might prevent them from learning this lesson as soon as they should.

I am not entirely sure that the principal did the right thing by using hand holding as a source of punishment. However the students will think twice before they settle their differences in a pugilistic encounter. What I do know is that taking education away from students, this suspending them, is not a good source of punishment. By suspending them you will be taking education away from them which will not be a smart thing to do. I know boys will be boy but you have to find a way to harness that type of behavior because that does not work in the corporate world.  We can send them to a class where they can learn to solve their differences verbally and not with their fist.  This type of knowledge is more tranferrable to another stage of their life. This has nothing to do with being gay. They are making fun of them in the wrong way.
