Gabrielle Union opens up about having a baby via surrogacy after spending years feeling like she 'needed' to get pregnant

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade welcome new baby

Real talk: They talked to Oprah about struggling to have a baby and their joy at adding to their family

  • Gabrielle, 46, and Dwyane, 36, welcomed daughter Kaavia on November 7
  • The new mom had suffered nine miscarriages before they turned to surrogacy
  • Dwyane told Oprah in a new interview that during that time, he questioned whether they should go on because it was 'dangerous' for Gabrielle
  • He also talked about taking paternity leave from the NBA to bond with Kaavia
  • They talked too about online trolls who criticized them for going the surrogacy route

Gabrielle Union says she never doubted for a minute that she wanted to keep trying to be a mother — even after nine miscarriages.

And now, the 46-year-old and her 36-year-old husband Dwyane Wade are the happy parents to a newborn daughter named Kaavia, whom they welcomed via surrogacy on November 7.

But while Gabrielle was unwavering over the course of years of losses, Dwyane wasn't just suffering those miscarriages. As he told Oprah in a new interview, he was also worried about his wife's health.

The couple sat down with Oprah for a special called Oprah at Home with Gabrielle Union, Dwyane Wade & Their New Baby, which will air on OWN on December 8 at 8pm.

A clip aired on Good Morning America today, in which Gabrielle said that motherhood has been just as tough as she imagined.

'It looked exactly as it is. I saw motherhood and parenthood with very realistic eyes. It looked hard,' she said.

But the wait was worth it. Gabrielle said that through the course of nine miscarriages, there was never a point where she wanted to give up and stop trying.

'I've always been of the mindset, because this is what people tell you: You work hard, you do the right things, you're a good person, it will happen for you — eventually,'

'I could not let go of this idea of creating life within me, that I could feel, that tied me to him, that he could be a part of, that the world could be a part of.

'I'm not letting myself and all these people down. I need to have — I need to be pregnant for everybody, including myself.'

Dwyane, though, was slightly less adamant when it came to what his wife had to go through.

'There came a part where I started to feel a certain way about [the miscarriages], because I didn't want something to happen to her, and it was getting dangerous,' he said. 'We had been trying so much... and I was getting nervous.'

'I always tell her, "I want this baby just as much as you do, but I married you and you are the most important thing to me,"' he said.

Finally, this year they welcomed a daughter, and appear on Instagram to be enjoying every minute of it.

Gabrielle Union cradles her little one in sweet Instagram posts

'We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days,' Gabrielle wrote at the time.

Unfortunately, though, there was some negativity from other people — namely trolls who had criticized their used of a surrogate and how Gabrielle adapted to motherhood.

'I think for me the most hurtful thing was once we had our baby, and everyone started to talk about, "Why is she in the bed holding a baby, why she got a gown on, why she acting like she just had a baby?"' Dwyane said.

'And it's like, once again, people are uneducated on the process.'

Loving words: 'I always tell her, "I want this baby just as much as you do, but I married you and you are the most important thing to me,"' he said

Staying home: He said that he and Gabrielle do everything as a team, so it was natural for him to take off too

It was a shift for both of them after Kaavia's birth, as Dwyane decided to go on paternity leave and missed seven NBA games — a decision he defends.

'Having a surrogate carry our baby, I wasn't able to be like, "Hey baby, daddy's here,"' he said, mimicking talking to Gabrielle's belly.

'To have these conversations, so she can hear me, so we can sing to her, so we can read to her.

'So this connection that we both needed, it had to happen right away. And for me it was like, I've always done things my way.

'And they expect my wife to take off, right, why not expect me to take off as well? We're parents. We're doing this together. There's no she does this, I do this. No, we do this together. So for me it was a no-brainer.'

It looks like Gabriel Union‘s dream of becoming a mother has finally come true.
Thursday afternoon, the 46-year-old stunned fans by posting pictures of herself, husband Dwyane Wade, and their new baby girl onto her social media account!
“A LOVELY DAY” the new mother declared on Instagram. “We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days. Welcome to the party sweet girl! #onelastdance #skintoskin@dwyanewade ❤”

The actress has previously opened up about the pain she’s endured during her attempts to have a child. In her book, We’re Going to Need More Wine, she confessed that she had suffered from a severe case of baby lust, but had so many miscarriages that she actually lost count.

“In order to tell you the exact number, I would have to get my medical records,” she told People magazine back in 2017, guessing the number was eight or nine.
“For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — either about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle. I have endured eight failed IVF cycles … For as long as I can remember now, Dwyane and I have lived in a state of extended expectation.”
