Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya snaps at reporter for claiming racial drama 'ticks all the right boxes'

Cold reception: Kaluuya appeared to be unimpressed with the well meaning reporter's line of questioning

A Sky presenter was left red faced on Sunday evening during a red carpet interview with Oscar hopeful Daniel Kaluuya at the 90th annual Academy Awards

The 29-year old Londoner narrowly lost out on the coveted Best Actor award for his leading role in the critically acclaimed Get Out, one of four nominations at the annual ceremony.

But he was clearly annoyed while speaking to Arts and Entertainment Correspondent Lucy Cotter outside the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles after she claimed the racial drama ‘ticked a lot of boxes and raised a lot of important things.’

Audibly tutting, he told her: ‘We’re not boxes though! Articulating a black experience isn’t a box. It’s like, what we are articulating is our truth. We are human beings.’

To make matters worse, Lucy appeared to forget Kaluuya, who was born in London to Ugandan parents, is actually British during a pre-interview introduction - during which she wrongly assumed Gary Oldman was the only homegrown nominee.

'Can't wait to see the Get Out lot!' she enthused to camera. 'It's a film everyone's talking about, and Daniel Kaluuya. Obviously we're hoping Gary Oldman will get the Best Actor award.'

Oldman would eventually go on to win the award for his portrayal of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

Taking to Twitter, fans praised Kaluuya for his handling of the incident, with one writing: 'Yes very good actor. But to be intelligent enough to answer that question and not be rude but use a proper answer and down to earth answer that’s really impressive and refreshing to see.'

Another added: 'It must get frustrating, so I have nothing but respect for the patience and professionalism he shows. No one should be expected to educate in that way. Credit to him that he chooses to.'

A third raged: 'Oh my god how could she even go there?? How dare she! I mean, surely she must be suspended or even charged for saying such atrocities.'

'Yep. Gobsmacking. Just a whole load of someone's unconscious, live on telly... gotta love the #Oscars,' wrote another.

Elsewhere another exasperated fan raged: 'I mean she JUST SAID HIS NAME.'
